Captain Cèo (k,ēˈō)
Much of what we learn in the place where we contribute our time and effort is through education (orientation & training) and through hands-on experience. This is how we become certified, qualified, knowledgeable, skilled, competent and recognized for the contributions we make to the society sullenly known as the workplace. I have found, however, that learning, that is to say, how much is understood and retained, is much more enjoyable and effective when laced with entertaining stories. This is especially true for those who do not appreciate learning through formal training or educational materials like this book/blog or any form of un-entertaining (some might say, boring).
I know through the many training courses I have conducted around the globe, and through the hundreds of hours of coaching and mentoring, that many of these human resources prefer to be entertained while learning. Hence, my attempt at conveying a serious topic with a not-so-serious character: Captain Cèo (pronounced kˌēˈō).
Captain Cèo is the fictional commander of the HpO Vision, a 176 foot packet ship designed to navigate the waters that lay between continents, ranging from the 50th parallel north (crossing Europe, Asia, the Pacific Ocean, North America, and the Atlantic Ocean) and the 40th parallel south (crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, Australasia, the Pacific Ocean and South America). The captain’s monarchy enlisted him to establish a supply of copper concentrate for the proposed construction of industrial-age smelters (circa 1820) in Upper Canada. At the time, copper ore was mined and processed in Cornwall, England where Captain Cèo hailed from, and from where he studied both geology and nautical sciences before choosing to set sail on what would eventually be a lifetime of adventures at sea.
Captain Cèo is a leader in the true sense of the word; a visionary, innovator, and a fearless adventurer. Although mellow with age, his seasoned character is often the source of anxiety for his crew, specifically within the ranks of his senior officers. Nevertheless, they respect his leadership and will follow him to the farthest shores, which is exactly where Captain Cèo intends to go.
Follow Captain Cèo on his final expedition as he navigates rough seas and endures risky adventures and challenging conditions in search of a buried treasure: a treasure so valuable that upon his return, he is sure to be knighted by his monarchy. What Captain Cèo discovers is not the tangible raw materials that make peak performing organizations profitable. Rather, he discovers the invaluable, intangible culture; which makes an HpO (High-performance Organization) sustainable.
